Shemaroo Entertainment Limited has launched the making of the grand musical, ‘Mughal-e-Azam: The Musical’ exclusively on Prime Video through the Prime Video Direct self-publishing program, allowing Prime Video members to witness the efforts that went into the making of the musical. First showcased on 21st October 2016, it won 7 out of 14 awards at the Broadway World India Awards 2017, including Best Indian Play, Best Director, Best Original Costume Design, Best Ensemble cast and many more. The making will soon be released on other platforms as well.
The documentary lets viewers witness everything that was required – the production, characters, team – to put up a musical as ginormous as this one. The making is not fake in any way. It does not just show picture perfect moments, but also ones where Feroz Abbas Khan loses his cool when things seem to be falling apart. It is heartening to see the Indian and International teams coming together and doing their best and everyone praying together minutes before the curtains make way for everyone to see ten months of hard work condensing into two and half hours of a visual extravaganza.
Mughal-e-Azam tells the story of Emperor Akbar who sends his son Salim to the dreaded war, wanting him to learn courage and discipline. Years later, Salim returns as a soldier and falls in love with Anarkali, a lowly courtesan.
Mughal-e-Azam was a Bollywood film that was first released in 1960. It was a historical drama and redefined movie making in India. Starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala and Durga Khote, directed by K. Asif and produced by Shapoorji Pallonji, the film cost more than any other movie made in India before that and shattered all box office records. It was a film for which fans stood all day to buy tickets. To make a musical based on a movie like that was no mean feat. But, as Feroz told one of his actors, if they worried about comparisons, they would never be able to work. That is some sound advice.
The musical, that is still going strong, will make its Dubai Opera premiere in January 2019. It stars Nissar Khan, Sonal Jha, Priyanka Barve/Neha Sargam, Syed Shahab Ali/Dhanveer Singh and many others playing pivotal roles.
