  • Anthony Mackie, Margaret Qualley remain strong in IO: Last on Earth

Netlix delves now and then in the sci-fi zone. It has brought to screen several and they haven’t always hit the mark. This week, Netflix brings IO, an original film set in a post-apocalyptic future where humans are moving out of the planet in hordes.

IO: Last on Earth stars Margaret Qualley, Anthony Mackie, Danny Huston and others. Jonathn Helpert directs this Netflix Original.

Some have decided to stay, including Sam, a research assistant who’s trying to figure out whether there’s any possibility of surviving on our beloved planet. Things go for a toss when a mysterious stranger arrives and decides to take Sam to a safe place.

What’s Wow: IO: Last on Earth is different than any other post-apocalyptic film we have ever seen. Though there’s impending danger, the film is bereft of any action sequences between humans or humans or anything in between. The film packs a punch because it talks about existentialism, loneliness, the audacity of hope and everything in a tightly packed screenplay.

There are dilogues all around, and audiences interested in that kind of cinema are in for a treat. The performances are understated and that brings out interesting characters to the fore. Margaret Qualley does a great job of portraying the heartbreak, the nervousness and the sheer guts a woman would need to survive in the space game.

Johanthan Helpert brings the IOverse to the audiences. There’s some interesting aspects to the screenplay, like when the audience gets to know how the characters are surviving after almost everything has become extinct.

What’s Blah: Unfortunately, what works for the film is also its Achille’s heel. Audiences are by now ready for some action, some thrill and such ebbs and flows the moment they hear the word apocalyptic. There’s nothing of that sort, making the whole premise a little bit cosmetic. Like, the emotion and the trauma should could also be about a woman’s who trying to travel out of her country.

Parting Shot: IO: Last on Earth is a passable film about human emotions. But do go in looking for thrilling action.
