The video streaming business is really gathering steam. In just three years, Indian audiences now have the best of both worlds – local content as well as international. Hotstar has remained an integral and important part of the streaming game, by being the only platform that brings immensely popular series like Game of Thrones and others to the Indian audiences.

Now, there are rumours that Flipkart is looking to buy a stake in Hotstar. There has been no official confirmation yet. If the Walmart owned Flipkart is indeed looking for tieups, there will be one of the biggest for e-commerce and entertainment. Pundits have seen how Amazon has a captive audience with their Amazon subscribers – something that helped them bolster Amazon Prime by offering the subscription at low prices.

Big companies buying stakes in media companies is not new. Recently, Reliance bought a stake in ALTBalaji. ALTBalaji itself has a tie-up with Airtel for their Airtel app. It will be interesting to see whether Flipkart does end up buying a stake in Hotstar.
