ZEE5 is one of the biggest brands to come on the OTT platforms. With an inventory of films that dates more than two decades, it’s easy for them to create a huge library of films online. However, ZEE5 has decided to give a platform to some interesting content. Today, we review ZEE5’s new online-only docu-drama, The Sholay Girl.
The Sholay Girl tells the story of Reshma Pathan, a name not very well known outside film circles, but a legend inside them. After Hunterwali, it is Reshma Pathan who is known for her daring action sequences in the film industry. This is her story.
The film paths Reshma’s journey from a young girl who comes to the city in search of a job until her recent appearance in Rohit Shetty’s film, Golmaal Again. Her family is arrested on the accusation of smuggling rice, but she decides to live life on her own terms and starts doing stunts on the streets. A casting director spots her and it’s a rocky but entertaining ride post that.
What’s Wow: Bidita Baig does a great job of bringing the innocent resilience and confidence that Reshma would be in real life. The director succeeds in bringing Reshma’s life to screen and makes space for the drama and the emotion that would be patent in the life of an underdog. Faizal Akhtar, the writer, should be lauded for creating a crisp, modern story for Reshma Pathan.
The story is as resilient as the titular character is. The screenplay doesn’t spend time on having the character mope about what’s wrong with her life or has her second-guessing her choices in life. The general idea of this could be that when the character was so positive about life, why shouldn’t a film about her be? The bonus for film industry fans is trying to decipher which scenes and which actors and celebrities are portrayed on screen.
What’s Blah: With a character as interesting and a story as gripping, Faizal Akhtar had a chance to portray everything that’s right and everything that’s wrong with the film industry. Unfortunately, the writer decides to restrict the story only to the character and doesn’t include many scenes about the life and times of a film industry veteran. Some characters are left in the lurch and we really don’t know what happened to them as Reshma went from strength to strength. All in all, the flavour of the film is of a television documentary, when it could be as gritty and internal as Fashion.
Parting Shot: The Sholay Girl is an entertaining tale set in the most colorful stage of all, Bollywood.
