Web Series Sidehero Review: A good story set in Bollywood

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It takes guts to poke fun at one’s self, especially for a celebrity. So, the first reaction that one would give seeing Sidehero is a ‘what the…’. That’s because the who’s who of Bollywood is letting their hair down and taking part in an incredibly self-aware web series about the youngest member of a Bollywood family, Kunal Roy Kapoor, who is looking for that one break that will launch his career.

Kunal, playing himself, is a divorced, young man who is almost a celebrity. As he tries to hit superstardom, the audience is introduced to several aspects of the film industry, like paid appearances, underworld funding, broken relationships, the non-existence of nepotism in some cases, media frenzy, so on and so forth.

The episodes are frothy, light and the dialogues are spot on. A bonus is that this maybe the only time when audiences get to see the offices of Abhishek Bachchan, Vijay Krishna Acharya, Gauhar Khan and others.

This might be the most successful work done by professionals who are well known for their online work and those who are mainstream. We have Arjun Kanungo and Gopal Dutt in the cast as well. A few years down the line, this series might be listed as one of the few underrated ones.

This one is a whacky, almost surreal journey into celluloid – one that is so entertaining only because at least some legit celebs decided to poke fun at themselves.  It’s difficult to lay a finger on what really works for the series or sets it apart. The scenes between Kunal and Gauhar have a specific warmth, the duo-logues between Shakti Kapoor and Kunal are whacky and the entire story track is one hell of a humour ride.

What’s Wow: Kunal Roy Kapoor is a fantabulous actor and does a good job of getting the audience into the groove of this surreal web series. Gopal Dutt is incredible as the casting director and the rest of the gives a memorable performance.

What’s Blah: Nothing
