It is such a treat to watch a web series, which is not based in any of the four metros of the country. Unlike the first two Amazon Prime Video originals in India – Inside Edge and Going Viral, the streaming service has chosen the city of Raipur/Visakhapatnam for its third web series titled Laakhon Mein Ek.

The protagonist Aakash Gupta, a Raipur native is forced into a pre IIT coaching institute by his father. But the 15-year-old Aakash likes to make mimicry videos and post them online.

Despite his ambitions, he is decides to give the IIT coaching institute called Genius Infinity a try and tries to fit in even though he is evidently a misfit. His attempts to understand the syllabus are an epic fail, and he is placed in the notorious section D for his ‘dumbness’. The only solace, if any, are Bakri and Chudail his roommates.

Life takes a u-turn when Aakash’s cheating attempts are successful and he lands up in the section A, which is an ‘intelligent students only’ elite section.

What’s WOW? The simplicity of the series is very appealing. Ritwik Sahore is very natural, despite having to portray a gamut of emotions. Even Biswa Kalyan Rath makes an appearance. The small city feel has been captured beautifully.

What’s Blah? While watching the series, all you can think of is 3 Idiots, the Bollywood film. Not that there are any stark similarities, but probably the film has depicted college/student life so aptly that you can’t help compare any content in the same space with 3 Idiots.

Also the frustration and helplessness in the series is a bit too far-stretched. A viewer may even feel frustrated when these emotions appear on the screen. Maybe some more editing would have sufficed.

Parting Shot: Despite its many flaws, Laakhon Mein Ek deserves applause for unearthing the scam called ‘coaching classes’. Many of such classes admit students only to mint more money. Watch the series for this reality check.
