Thriller as a genre is a tight rope walk. And it takes guts to attempt making a thriller series.

Amazon Prime Video’s newest offering Absentia is a series that revolves around an FBI agent Emily Byrne (essayed by Stana Katic one of the producers of the series). She disappears without a trace and is declared dead. A banker Conrad Harlow, who Emily alleged was involved in a series of crime, is convicted of her murder.

Her husband Special Agent Nick Durand feels guilty of not saving her. Six years after Emily’s murder, Nick receives a call from Conrad that Emily is alive. While Nick is happy that he saved Emily, there is a slight problem. Nick remarried and his son with Emily has been raised by his new wife Alice.

That though is one of Emily’s problems. After coming back, her alleged killer Conrad is released. And she keeps having flashes of the time when she was kidnapped and held captive inside a water tank.

Adding more fuel to the fire is a dead body found in a water body. It is found out that the dead man is another suspected criminal who was being chased by Emily. To top it all, the DNA found in the dead body’s nail belongs to Emily.

There are many more happening which prove that Emily may not be innocent at all, and in fact, may have staged her capture to. What this does Emily? Already reeling under the flashes of her time in the water tank and a bleeding eye, Emily decides she has to clear her name, even if she dies doing so. What doesn’t work for her is that everyone believes that there’s something wrong with her and has committed the crimes she has been accused of.

What’s WOW? Stana Katic as Emily is very convincing. Special mention to Patrick McAuley, who plays Emily’s son Flynn, he portrays a diverse set of emotions with ease which is commendable at such a young age.

The screenplay of the series is engaging and enthralling. And no point do you want to skip, or forward a scene. The locales of Bulgaria where the series is shot are breathtaking.

What’s Blah? At ten episodes with an average time of 40-50 minutes, the series may be unnecessarily elongated. Apart from that, there’s hardly anything to complain.

Parting Shot: All thriller lovers out there, you just can miss this one. Absentia will keep you on the edge of your seats right from the start, until the end.
