It is surprising that nobody knows about Reshma Pathan, and it is good that ZEE5 is finally making a series about the person who’s said to be India’s first stuntwoman. The clan of stuntwomen and men are shockingly not spoken about at all. Even in Hollywood, only now, with the advent of social media, do we see the actors posting photos of their stunt doubles on their social media. Bollywood had tried to make a film on Indian stuntmen, Stuntman, in 1994, which starred Jackie Shroff and Zeba Bakthiar.

That film, unfortunately, didn’t do well at the box office. But now, Bidita Baig stars as the titular character in The Sholay Girl, which shows that Reshma Pathan was the stuntwoman who drove the tonga in the iconic scene from Sholay, where Basanti (Hema Malini) tries to escape the dacoits on her tonga. This is one of the 75 new web series that ZEE5 has announced for this year. For all its worth, a woman wearing different clothing can be seen in the scene, driving the tonga, at the 0:16 point in the trailer. The difference between what the stuntwoman is wearing and what Basanti’s character is wearing is very much visible, now that we have the context.
