‘Jagga Jasoos’ is one of the most interesting films in Bollywood. The film opened to rave reviews but has not made money. Now, skeletons are tumbling out of the closets with Rishi Kapoor, Ranbir’s dad, slamming director Anurag Basu on public platforms. The ‘Jagga Jasoos’ controversy refuses to die down. There’s strong buzz that the producer in Ranbir Kapoor has finally woken up. Rumours around are that Ranbir, the producer of ‘Jagga Jasoos’ is looking at deals with streaming platforms like Amazon, Netflix. This could deflect some of losses that Ranbir is making as a producer. He hasn’t had a good time producing films – his Bombay Velvet was a critical and commercial debacle.
This might be big news, but film-makers are doing this since a long time. The moment their films are out of the reckoning in theatres, producers are clicking deals with streaming platforms. This achieves two goals. One, the film lives forever on the Internet and two; it gets an audience it never quite could achieve in the theatre run.
This has given Netflix and Amazon some brilliant films. Munish Bharadwaj’s neo noir film ‘Moh Maaya Money’ is available. Then there’s the Sanjay Mishra starrer ‘Aankhon Dekhi’. Another Sanjay Mishra starrer that’s on the streaming platforms is ‘Saare Jahaan Se Mahenga’, which talks about how inflation is killing the common man. Such quirky stories are available now, and so are out and out masala films like Force 2.
