Netflix is dabbling a lot with sci-fi and action. It all started with the Marvel web series like Daredevil and Jessica Jones and reached peak with other sci-fi web series like Altered Carbon, Mute and the Will Smith starrer Bright.
Now, in its next step towards bringing sci-fi to the streaming screens, Netflix launches The Rain, a survival horror action flick that’s set in a dystopian world. This is a Scandinavian series that has two siblings take a path that’s as difficult as it is dangerous.
The Rain is created by Jannik Tai Mosholt, Esben Toft Jacobsen and Christian Potalivo and stars Alba August,, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Lars Simonsen, Iben Hjejle, Angela Bundalovic, Sonny Lindberg, Jessica Dinnage, Lukas Løkken and Johannes Kuhnke.
Survival horrors are tricky proposition. They are big budget and there are so many of them that a series should be epic to catch the attention of fans. Netflix is investing heavily into futuristic series and films that are not just good films but cinematic experiences that are worth the biggest screens that the audience can watch content in. But when a survival horror clicks, it immediately attains iconic status and becomes a money spinner – the prospect of a franchise is always evident.
The Rain streams May 4.
