While competitor Netflix is constantly in news for more web series for India, Amazon Prime Video India has another dragon to slay. Amazon’s India head for Prime Video Nitesh Kripalani has quit the company citing personal reasons. The company has meanwhile appointed Vijay Subramaniam, Director, Content for Prime Video India as his replacement for an interim period.
This development comes as a blow to Amazon Prime India which was launched in December last year. Under Nitesh, Amazon Prime launched its first web series ‘Inside Edge‘, which is the second best performing Original, with more percentage of unique streamers in its home market than any other show except ‘The Grand Tour’ (in the UK). Given the reactions it’s generated, Inside Edge’s season two is also said to be in the offing.
Apart from this, several other big names associated themselves with Amazon Prime under Nitesh’s leadership. Salman Khan recently struck a streaming deal for his films a la Shah Rukh Khan with Netflix. Apart from that Zoya Akhtar-Reema Kagti’s Tiger Baby announced ‘Made in Heaven‘ as a co-production with Amazon. Anushka Sharma will be producing a web series for Amazon; and Kabir Khan’s The Forgotten Army will also be aired on Amazon Prime. Other biggies that have tied up with Amazon are Phantom Films, Sujoy Ghosh, Ali Abbas Zafar, AIB, Ram Madhvani-Prasoon Joshi, etc. for original content.
Here’s hoping that Amazon Prime India finds an equally motivated head as Nitesh Kripalani, as his successor.
