Earlier, there were rumors that Netflix is in talks with Aamir Khan Productions for the digital rights of Dangal – and willing to pay 20 crore for the same. Now, the buzz is that streaming giant Netflix is trying to get digital rights for all the films under Aamir Khan’s film banner, Aamir Khan Productions, and that too for a whopping 500 crore. There are rumours of what the obvious next step is – Netflix is in talks with the actor’s production house for the digital rights of his upcoming film, ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ too.
If this deal comes through, viewers will be able to view Aamir’s films like Lagaan and Taare Zameen Par too. It is unclear whether Netflix will be putting these films up for viewing on a perpetual basis. Netflix constantly updates its playlist, which means that many films that were previously available are no longer available in their library.
This is certainly good news for the Indian fraternity that makes short films and documentaries, with Aamir’s deal creating a benchmark for the valuation of great Indian content.
