The eponymous sci-fi franchise Star Trek finally comes to Netflix with their first season, Star Trek: Discovery. Unlike other Netflix series, this is not a full-binge. The first two episodes are now streaming on Netflix. The entire series will be available in January.
The first two episodes are set in the USS Shenzou and is set after ten years of the events in Star Trek: The Original Series. Phillipa Georgiou, the captain of the ship has a camaraderie with Michael Burnham, the human raised as a Vulcan as she joins the ship. However, things are mean to be cool and non-violent on the Shenzou, and soon they are attacked by the Klingons. It is this attack that changes lives and perspectives for everyone else.
What’s Wow: The female protagonist works. Full points to the scriptwriters to create not one but two powerful female characters without getting into things like love, romance etc. It is nice to see that there’s not a single romantic track – at least in the first two episodes of this geekathon.
Sonequa Martin-Green brings the ethos of woman v space with her performance and so does Michelle Yeoh, who plays the captain of the ship. The writers of the show have successfully created a gripping, postmodern franchise that we can all root for.
What’s Blah: This is an all-star top of the line production, so there’s nothing really wrong out there. As far as the script is concerned, it’d be difficult to decide on that in the two episodes that we’ve seen.
Parting Shot: Star Trek: Discovery kick starts a whole new adventure
Cast: Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Mary Wiseman, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Yeoh,
