Netflix Originals are more known for their horror and sci-fi titles. But Netflix is seemingly trying to change that with some warm, mushy titles – like Wine Country. The Netflix Original is about a group of older women, friends for a lifetime, who come together to celebrate the 50th birthday of one of them. the group decide to do this in California’s Wine Country, and there’s wine tasting all around. Eventually, the gang of girls begin to unravel their lives, accept it as it is and move on.
Rebecca (Rachel Dratch) is celebrating her 50th birthday with her friends, Catherine (Ana Gasteyer), Abby (Amy Poehler), Naomi (Maya Rudolph), Val (Paula Pell) and Jenny (Emily Spivey). The group of friends decide to have a nice weekend in California’s Wine Country. However, while they leave their lives behind, their lives don’t. Naomi is waiting for an important medical information, Rebecca herself knows that her life has not been the best, while Catherine is finding it difficult to make the change from a workaholic to a fun loving, affable woman.
What’s Wow : The lead cast has an incredible warmth and chemistry that surges right through this coming of age film. It has the right doses of drama and corny comedy to keep the audience engaged throughout, until the end of the film. The comedy scenes and the emotional ones hit the right chords. This is a well-meaning, low-wattage film that will keep you going through your evening.
The five are at their best in all the scenes. The warmth among them comes out in all of them, whether its giving out questionable, adult themed gifts or acting massy in a millennial meeting.
First time director Amy Poehler knows the kind of cast she’s working with and creates a compelling story with her bold to the face camera angles as well as the all encompassing tv-origin ones. The screenplay is a winner too, making the story snappy and engaging instead of sappy and extra.
What’s Blah : Wine Country is an interesting concept and it is executed well. However, the film could have done much better, given its premises. There’s little backstory to the friends. So, you aren’t sure whether you’re watching the weekend getaway of a serial killer or a good person.
Parting Shot : Wine Story is a compelling coming of age movie.
