  • The Christmas Chronicles ticks all the right boxes.
  • Kurt Russel is amazing as Santa Claus in The Christmas Chronicles.

Netflix has conquered the audience’s viewing habits with some sensational content. It has a special soft spot towards India and has come up with some great content for Indian audiences, but with films like Christmas Chronicles opening just before festival season, looks like Netflix is now looking to capture the family viewing market as well. The Christmas Chronicles is one of the several family-oriented, holiday friendly film coming out of the Netflix stables.

Kurt Russel plays Santa Claus, who gets waylaid by a brother and sister, Teddy and Katie due to an unfortunate incident. Katie believes in Santa Claus, while Teddy finds it difficult to believe in him, after the demise of their father.  When Teddy and Katie have to help Santa to being back the Christmas spirit, it asks a lot from Teddy but Katie is all up for it.

It’s difficult to make a Holiday and a Christmas oriented film in 2018. Children are becoming smarter, the world is becoming a sadder place, but Santa Claus is still something everyone hangs on to. There have been reports of how children have been shocked after being told that Santa Claus doesn’t exist. For all the technological miracles, it is amazing how human nature cannot let go of the idea of a potbellied man running down chimneys to give Christmas presents.

What’s Wow: It is this emotion that plays out well in this film. Christmas Chronicles is not a classic, but that’s just how these holiday films are made. These are saccharine sweet, politically correct, simply told stories that endure and cater to a mass audience. So, the screenplay’s nod to aspects like how fake news exists, or the dig at how Santa Claus is a model for a beverage company and doesn’t have anything to do with Christians sets it apart from the glut of Christmas themed films that will soon crowd the market. And then there’s that cameo in the end that’s a whole fresh wave of nostalgia.

Kurt Russel as a badass Santa Claus is good casting. As was expected, he gives a performance that lifts this film up in the sky, without the need of reindeers.
