Netflix Original Review: Alex Strangelove

Craig Johnson brings a unique, emotional love story to the screen with Alex Strangelove, a Netflix original that stars Daniel Dohengy as the titular character, who’s got too many things on his mind. He has a girlfriend and they are planning to – desperately – consummate their relationship. Thankfully, he has a good enough support system in his friends.

All seems to be going on well until he meets another boy of the same age – someone who’s openly gay. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

What’s Wow: Alex Strangelove has its emotions in place. The performances are good, and each of the character exude the innocence and charm that a high school student should.

The story’s good and keeps the audience engaged, but what really makes the audience cling to the story are the performances.

Antonio Marziale as the other boy is a revelation, and his performance keeps the mystique real. Madeline Weinstein plays the nervous, in-love young woman to the hilt.

What’s Blah: Nothing

Parting Shot: Alex Strangelove is an inherently warm, quirky film that has something for everybody.

Cast: Daniel Doheny, Antonio Marziale, Madeline Weinstein, Joanna Adler, William Ragsdale, Daniel Zolghardi

Directed by: Craig Johnson

Alex Strangelove is now streaming on Netflix.
