Ozark is the latest series with crime as a central theme. Crime is one of the greatest inspirations for film-makers. Time and again, they come up with some of the most interesting and intriguing entertaining pieces. Several short film and web series makers have taken inspiration from real life crimes. Some have ventured forth and created their own crime conspiracy stories. In fact, in the past couple of years, web series based on crime have been the most successful.
There was Breaking Bad that spoke about a innocent man going down the path of crime. Then there was Better Call Saul, which was about a lawyer taking up any and every cases that came in his way. And the crowning glory was The Good Wife, a heady mixture of crime, politics and drama. Another immensely popular marriage of politics and crime is House of Cards. But with more than 20 seasons of crime , is a new crime series actually needed? Because Ozark is just that. An accountant who launders money is forced to launder a crime boss’ money in faraway Missouri.
What’s Wow: Crime series still have it, and Ozark is right at home with crime series fans. The characters are well written, the story is unique – which in turn allows for an interesting screenplay. On the performance front, Jason Bateman hits the ground running and delivers a great performance. Giving him company are the likes of Laurey Linney, Sofia Hublitz, Julia Garner, Jordana Spiro and others. Their performances are part for the course. Of course the series starts with a literal blast, with the last minutes of the pilot ending in death of two characters.
What’s Blah: Ozark is a well written and well enacted crime drama. However, streaming sees so much of crime series that it’s difficult to stand against the grain – and that is something that Ozark can’t do. We have seen it all before, tense moments, surprise deaths, spiraling twists, and all that. So, while the first season is great – we wait to see how good the second season can be. More importantly, can it break away from the clutter.
Parting Shot: Ozark is a good crime series, but needs to up the ante to become popular.
