Canine stories, or any animal stories for that matter, are always a delight to watch. So is Netflix’s newest offering Benji.
Benji is the story of a stray dog, accidentally left alone as a pup, when his entire family is captured by animal control staff. As a grown-up dog, he is wandering around the city when he bumps into Carter, a young boy who is bullied at school. Carter makes sure the shy Benji reaches his home through a strawberry trail, whilst Carter is walking home with his younger sister Frankie.
The brother sister duo recently lost their dad and are trying miserably to come to terms with it. They want to get their dad’s watch back from the pawn shop, and secretly deposit money with the shop owner.
At home, their mother freaks out on finding Benji as she is having trouble feeding the three of them and another mouth to feed is a burden she can’t afford.
The kids are devastated on hearing their mother and let Benji out of their home. Next day as they visit the pawn shop, which is being looted by masked men; the looters take the kids away as Frankie reveals the face of one of them.
Benji, roaming in the streets again as a stray, wants to get back to the family and discovers that the kids are being taken away. There is an interesting climax which definitely must be kept under wraps.
What’s WOW? Benji is a treat (pun intended) to watch right from the start till the end. There are some awesome moments in the Original that will make you go ‘aww’ and also push to have some canine love in your life.
What’s Blah? What flaw can you possibly find in a film that has a dog as its protagonist?
Parting Shot: Benji is a must watch for all animal lovers, and especially for dog lovers. It deserves a big fat thumbs-up.
