Netflix has announced an increase in monthly fees for USA – a first in two years. It has hiked costs for two of its three main subscription plans.

The standard plan will go from $9.99 to $10.99 per month and the premium plan – which allows streaming on four screens in high definition – will jump from $11.99 to $13.99 per month. The silver lining in this cloud is that the basic plan will remain at $7.99, which only offers standard definition video on one screen.

Netflix has already begun raising prices for new customers and will begin increasing prices for current subscribers on October 19. Current customers will be notified 30 days in advance.

In India, though, we expect Netflix to wait for its very first original to stream – Sacred Games starring Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. On the basis of its response, Netflix may increase its charges à la Amazon Prime which increased its subscription charges from INR 499 to INR 999 after tasting magnanimous success with Inside Edge.
