Netflix dropped a bomb that should make a huge crater in the streaming scenario, they announced their standup comedy series with India’s female standup comedienne, Aditi Mittal. Unbelievably, this is the first Indian standup comedy series that will have a woman as the main act.
For a platform that has a film almost every day coming out about feminism, it’s weird that there’s no female standup comedy. Recently, Amazon was outed for having 14 standup shows featuring males, but not a single one with females. That culminated into a awkward conversation between the male standup comedians, FilmCompanion’s Anupama Chopra and Aditi Mittal, one of the few Indian female standup comedy talents.
With this, Netflix has really belled the cat and called out all the post modern and hip content producers for their sheer hypocrisy – did they not find female standup comedy talents up to the mark? Did they make a decision that no female shall trample on their standup stage ‘just ‘cause?’ These and other questions will remain unanswered, but Indian comedy is going into a bold, brave new zone with Aditi Mittal’s ‘Things They Wouldn’t Let Me Say’.
