Amazon Prime finally gets into the sitcom genre with Mind the Malhotras, starring Cyrus Sahukar and Mini Mathur as a couple, Rishabh and Shefali, who believe that they are dysfunctional. Completing the cast are their twin daughters, Dia (Nikki Sharma) and Jia (Anandita Pagnis), their son, Yohan (Jason D’Souza) and mother-in-law, played by Sushmita Mukherjee. The everyday based sitcom also has an extended cast of Rish and Shef’s neighbors and friends. Here’s the complete review of Mind the Malhotras.

The sitcom starts with Rish and Shef at the counsellor’s, (Denzel Smith) and it takes us through all the ups and downs that the two have faced – and tells us about how they have faced them. This is a feel good, show-with-a-heart, so the problems are at best first world and call for a screen play that calls for some warm laughs.

What’s Wow : As expected, Cyrus and Mini are the soul of the show. Their charming chemistry is the heartbeat of the series – something that’s a treat to watch. The show’s writers, Sahil and Karan Sharma have kept the show’s tone decidedly light and frothy – a far cry from the serious content that’s becoming the main menu of streaming platforms all over India and the world.  Denzel Smith, who plays the counsellor gives a tongue firmly in cheek performance as the granite jawed counsellor – the man who depicts no emotion.

Mind the Malhotras truly brings the sitcom concept to Indian streaming, and only the aspects that need to get in. While the series looks bland and ‘too much tv’, it’s noteworthy that it doesn’t preach. It doesn’t have sequences that are a quick study into Patriarchy 2.0. So, scenes of boyfriends coming into meet the twin sisters are no big deal.  In fact, the series celebrates the awkwardness a modern father-mother might face while facing their children’s love interests.   This is a sitcom that talks about Butter chicken, wine, etc. You’d be surprised to know that the most Indian sitcoms have come close to depicting the ‘nonveg’ food is the humble morning ‘ohm-lay-te’.
