If you think Netflix didn’t give you many superheroes, they are coming up with a series that features an entire family of superheroes – and Mary J Blige is part of it. The series, The Umbrella Academy will feature an estranged family of superheroes who are working together to find out who killed their father. Apart from Mary, the other acts are Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Allison, Vanya, Klaus and Number Five. Blige plays a time-traveling hitwoman. Blige first made an appearance on Netflix in a cameo in Mudbound and was nominated for Best Supporting actress.
The Umbrella Academy is based on graphic novels of the same name. Gerard Way has written the series and the illustration is by Gabriel Ba. This is a Dark Horse Comics imprint. Universal Cable Productions produce, and Steve Blackman is the executive producer and director. Additional executive producers are Bluegrass Television, Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg from Dark Horse Entertainment.
This is proof that Netflix is now looking at other superhero content now that their deal with Disney/Marvel is coming to an end. Dark Horse Comics is known for their edgier content and with the mature look that Netflix has given to series like Daredevil, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, a Dark Horse Comics and Netflix collaboration seems like a marriage made in heaven for audiences.
