The 1992 sports drama starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna, A League of Their Own will now be made into a web series by Amazon Prime. Amazon Prime has signed up with Sony Pictures for this project. The superhit film is a sports comedy that was a fictionalisation of a real-life women’s baseball team in 1940s and 1950s, which was called the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. Hans Zimmer, who is one of the best composers in the world gave the background score and Penny Marshall directed.
Will Graham, who earlier worked on Mozart in the Jungle and Broad City writer Abbi Jacobson will will co-write and produce. There’s also talk the remake will be a modern look but will retain the 1930s and 40s flavour.
This is the second big budget web series project that Amazon has signed up for. They had earlier signed up to create a prequel for JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series, which could well be the most expensive web series ever made. There’s buzz that the series will be equivalent to Game of Thrones in terms of production values and budgets.
Amazon and Netflix are trying hard to bring mainstream and streaming together by routinely tripping from one path to another, but whether it finally happens is something we’ll know only in time.
