Celebrated writer Khaled Hosseini has collaborated with The Guardian to contribute to Sea Prayer – a virtual reality short film. It commemorates the second death anniversary of three year old Syrian boy Alan Kurdi, who died in his migration journey from Syria to Greek Island of Kos. Khaled’s fictional letter is narrated by BAFTA Award winning Adeel Akhtar.
Sea Prayer revolves around a father narrating a letter for his son Marwan on the eve of the family’s sea journey to cross over to Europe for refuge like Alan was doing. Liz Edwards has created the film’s illustrations using Tilt Brush – a tool used for painting in a 3D space combining it with VR.
Critically acclaimed VR maestro Liz Edwards in collaboration with The Guardian’s virtual reality team and SoWhen? have created the effects for this film. The background score has been composed by Sahba Aminika (Iranian-American composer of contemporary classical music) and performed by David Coulter (saw player) along with Kronos Quartet (an award winning string quartet).
