Sunny Leone is a name that has captured the imagination of mainstream a well as alternate media. Hate or not, she is one of the very few imports who are successful. And whether Sunny likes to use this as yardstick or not, but she is the only foreign adult film actor to be accepted by Indian audiences and making a career out of it.

Sunny Leone has been the subject of two series. Netflix earlier streamed a documentary on her, Mostly Sunny. Zee5 decided to ramp it all up with a web series about not just about Sunny but everyone who has been part of her life, Karenjit Kaur:  The Untold Story of Sunny Leone.  The first season of the series was a dampener, thanks to its whitewashed story and trying to portray Sunny Leone as a Miss Goody Two Shoes. The second season of the web series his now released, and here’s our complete review.

The second season of the series starts with a concrete backstory, made through the story of the first season. While the first season spoke about how Karenjit Kaur became Sunny Leone, the second season talks about the issues she faces with her newfound fame and the problems she faced with the people that she interacted with.  The second season touches on the personal lives of the entire Kaur family, and it makes for an interesting viewing.

What’s Wow: The second season is much better than the first one, and that’s because it finally gives an inside peek into the porn industry – like the fluffer scene – it’s quite a tame one for anyone who’s watched documentaries on porn, but still a revelation for the target audience.  Sunny Leone gives a good performance. Watching this series, it’s clear that Sunny does have the requisite acting chops to make it big in Bollywood. The script gives her little to do, but whatever she does, she does it with elan.

But it is Grusha Singh who is the ebb and flow of the second season. She gives an intense performance that remains with the audience. It’s interesting to see her move from a plot point – someone who doesn’t understand her daughter’s choices, like the entire audience doesn’t – to an important character.

What’s Blah: Earlier, we had spoken about the unimaginative production and this time, the production team isn’t on its best behaviour. Anyone who knows Sunny Leone and has passing interest in the porn industry as a business knows what the AVN awards are. Passing something called AVA awards just looks lame. Today, name-changing is done only in spoofs and very low budget concepts – and Karenjit Kaur is none of them. The script names some of the most popular names in the porn industry. So, why couldn’t they take a few steps and gain legitimacy?

Parting Shot: A good addition to Zee5’s repertoire.
