Saie Tamhankar makes her streaming debut with Date with Saie, a thriller web series that will stream on Zee5. In the series, Saie plays herself, being stalked by a crazed fan. We got in touch with her and spoke to her at length. Here’s the transcript of our interview:
What made you say yes to Date with Saie?
The genre is a mix of fiction and nonfiction. I play myself on screen for the first time, the show has my name! What more could an actor ask for?
Have you been stalked in school?
I have been stalked when I was in school. He would buy things that were similar to what I bought. For example, if I bought a Hello Kitty notebook, he would buy the same thing. My mother had to tell him in a stern manner that if you want to befriend anyone, this is not the way. I have had stalkers, but you can’t really say. Maybe some people don’t know the right way to express their love and it becomes a nuisance.
Many films show stalking as being cool. Is Date with Saie about that?
It talks about the dangers and seriousness of a stalker. Films have brought the concept that the boy following the girl is cute. It’s not as cute as it’s shown on screen. It is very scary. Someone is keeping a tab on your daily routine and has information about your whereabouts is very scary. We shouldn’t treat it as a cute because it becomes a problem later. Around 10000 stalking cases are registered in India every year. It doesn’t seem to be a serious problem, but it can get nasty.
How was it working with Dnyanesh?
Dnyanesh is also a very good friend. It becomes easier when you are working with someone who knows you in and out. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of an actor. It is a good experience working with him.
Why do you think Marathi actors are coming to streaming now?
Marathi actors are yet to explore the streaming scene. It is very different. It has a different format. It’s going to stay online for ever. I think it’s a nice medium that don’t have censor pressures, or any other pressure of that sort. There aren’t issues like how many people will come to watch. It’s a very interesting format and it’s not been explored.
How open are you to work in the viral videos?
When I take up something, my question is not where it’s going to be broadcast. My concern is my character, and whether it’s a genre that I haven’t done before. I don’t bind myself that I will do only these kinds of roles and those kinds of roles. I will do anything that convinces me as an actor and a person.
Date with Saie will stream on Zee5 soon.
