Ashish Ranglani brings to life Mom and Co, The Zoom Studios web series that stars Neelima Azeem, Aayush Mehra and others. We caught up with Ashish for an exclusive tete-a-tete about his experience with Mom & Co.

How did you become a part of the show?

I knew the writer of the show. I was an intern on a film that she was an Assistant Director for, that was nine years ago. We have been in touch since then. She called me and told me that there’s this thing happening. We met, everything clicked, and everything fell in place.

What made you say yes to the show?

It was my first directorial venture. I was excited because the script had nothing to do with sex, gangster, my first kiss ever, drugs, beer – all that was the flavour of the season for streaming. It wasn’t about three room-mates. It was something very novel and simple. I thought it was a perfect opportunity and I jumped at it.

Tell us about the shoot.

It was a nineteen-day shoot. We shot in Mumbai. The story is spread across office spaces and houses. So, we shot on location when it comes to offices and some sets. As far as the mother’s house is concerned, we shot in a studio in Mumbai suburbs.

What’s your favourite memory from the shoot?

The climax was a memorable shooting sequence for me. Another thing I remember is that we had a lot of food on the show. That was difficult. The actors had to consume the food, so we had to make sure that we shoot on time, before the food goes stale.

How was it working with Neelima?

I knew what Neelima was bringing to the table. At the same time, I was worried whether I will be able to handle the acting talents of someone of her calibre and stature.

And Aayush?

Aayush is phenomenal. He is a very easy-going person. He is open to instructions and always collaborative and he believes in team effort. There was never a time when he interfered with the vision. He always had his homework done. He had an idea of how a scene should be shot. So, we would discuss it and come to a mutual understanding.

How was the character chemistry between Neelima and Aayush?

The series is about how a mother and son come together and bridge the gap. That’s a generation gap, a gap in the thought process and their views towards life. The series is about how they create a bridge. I was more than happy to have people from two different eras of entertainment. Aayush is recent. Neelima has a big body of work. In the first few episodes, it would look good if they are off. I
