The world of streaming has seen several changes in the past one year, at least in India. In the west as well as India, several content producers have brought about a difference to how the streaming market is viewed.  We list the top 5 game changers for the Indian market.

#1 Stranger Things showed us sci-fi works in streaming

Stranger Things is a benchmark in sci-fi. When it launched on Netflix, it gained popularity only via word-of-mouth. It became so popular that the launch of the second season was a pop culture event. The series changed how audiences and makers saw sci-fi for the streaming screens. What started out as a slightly unhinged mother looking for her son turned into a coming-of-age story of youngsters who were battling monsters way beyond their means.

#2 Inside Edge told the Indian audiences Indian web series were a possibility

Indian content producers were as such relegated to make small videos and put them up on YouTube. Even the produced shows were only on YouTube – even if they were immensely popular. Farhan Akhtar brought Inside Edge to Amazon Prime along with a bevy of mainstream actors like Vivek Oberoi, Richa Chadha and others.

#3 Vikram Bhatt showed Indian audiences were ready for taboo subjects

One of the first controversial web series in India was Vikram Bhatt’s Maaya, that dealt with the controversial subject of BDSM. Starring Shama Sikander and others, it had enough sensuality to keep the audiences hooked to their streaming screens.

#4 Daredevil showed us superhero action had a place in Streaming

Daredevil is a benchmark for superhero web series. It not only gave a jumpstart to superhero series, it also proved that if done right, the action sequences can be breathtaking. Daredevil’s success spawned two other web series, Luke Cage and Iron Fist fast enough for the audience to compare.

#5 ALTBalaji proved there’s still space for a streaming platform in India.

ALTBalaji is one of the first Indian players in the streaming market. They worked on creating fresh, new content for the India-based customer and came out with winners like Ragini MMS Returns and Bose: Dead/Alive.
