Ram Gopal Varma has been criticised for his films and his short films since a while. Even his dedicated fan following was finding it difficult to justify their belief in him. But now, finally, we see a glimpse of the real Ram Gopal Varma, the person who brought hard-hitting, every day stories to the screen, for the audiences to have a ‘yes, this happens conversation.’ His ‘Foreigner’ seems to handle something that happens all around us – and yet we never speak about it.
The trailer of ‘Foreigner’ has characters that we all have met sometime in life. A young, out-of-India woman for whom a handshake, strutting around the house in bare nothings is nothing out of the ordinary. We also have seen men of a particular social class who are first awed at such a woman, and then want to take undue advantage of it.
Ram Gopal Varma is the master of the ‘male gaze’. If you are a guy and if this doesn’t leave a ‘me too guilty’ phase, you are either lying or well, you aren’t a guy. While that gaze was evident in his films earlier too, it is here that he uses those camera angles to their best use.
The trailer is very interesting. Everything about it has captured our attention, even the impending danger that looms large. You can watch the trailer here:
