The next big streaming war could be in India, with Netflix going all out in a bid to conquer the streaming market here. We earlier told you that Netflix was going ahead and creating Hindi subtitles for its series. Sources say that Netflix will have an office in India soon. In a media interaction, the CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings said that the office will be as big as their Tokyo office. Netflix is betting big on the Indian market. They intend to become the top 5 apps to have on a smartphone in India.
Also, Netflix is doubling its budget for India, which spells good news for Indian film makers. Already, Netflix has inked deals with SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment. There were rumours that they are in talks with Aamir Khan Films for most of Aamir’s filmography.
Media buzz may spell that ‘streaming means Netflix’ in India, but the actual story is far from it. Netflix has a measly 7.5 million subscribers, as compared to Hotstar’s 63 million. Even Amazon Prime, a late entrant in the Indian market has something around 9 million subscribers.
With Netflix gearing up for the Indian market, the main problem it will face is fresh, inclusive and desi content for its viewers. And to combat this, they are inking deals with Indian film makers to come up with inclusive content.
