Farhan Akhtar has always believed in creating a cult. Be it with his debut as a director in Dil Chahta Hai which was refreshing as the early summer breeze or turning into an actor-singer with Rock On! Farhan Akhtar is our man when it comes to breaking old walls and replacing them with new ideas. While Netflix has been busy courting Shahrukh Khan and Amir Khan to enter the Digital ground, Amazon Prime has reportedly sealed a deal with the versatile Farhan Akhtar, known to wear the producer’s cap as frequently as the actor’s and filmmaker’s.
That’s not all, rumour has it that this could be the most expensive web series in India with each episode amounting to no less that 85 Lakhs!
The backdrop of the series is the Indian Premier League with its screen space invested in betting and relationships affecting the gentleman’s game.
The cast of the series is dotted with interesting actors like Vivek Oberoi, Richa Chadda, Gulshan Devaiah and Angad Bedi and has already in the making.
IPL is definitely a the most dramatic element in the package and the interesting cast in only upping the ante.
Vivek Oberoi, according to sources is a man who earns big bucks and loses them all to betting. Richa Chaddha and Angad Bedi play characters based on real life IPL team owners Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia. An insider reported, “Their personal relationship had a turbulent end as a result of which they parted ways. Professionally, they remained strong until 2014 when she filed a case against him for alleged molestation and intimidation.”
“In this web series, the writers felt it is tricky to involve their stormy love affair which got the better of their professional reputation. The writers toyed with the idea initially, but eventually gave it up since Ness is a powerful man and adapting any part of his life may prove to be a costly risk. For the first season, they are keeping the focus just on the game,” he added.
India is a tempting gold mine eyed by digital entertainment and global brands and looks like Farhan Akhtar’s Powerplay could be the next big thing to watch out for.
