Taj : A Story of Mughal India is the perfect setting for a magnum opus period drama since it moves in 3 directions simultaneously. A young Shahjahan falling in love with Arjumand (Mumtaz Mahal), an older Shahjahan building his dream or obsession of a Taj Mahal and the story of a poor Hindu carver together tie the historical background of the conflict between men of different faiths.
The web series will run into several seasons with an A list director, distinguished cast and lavish sets informed a close associate of the company.
The potential of Murari’s writing can be manifested into the digital screen very aptly because of the detailing present to sustain multiple episodes.
The novel by virtue of it’s narrative describes the passionate affair of Shah Jahan and Arjumand till her death through the voices of – Arjumand, Shah Jahan and Isa, Arjumand’s adored eunuch.
There is also a parallel narrative of the crumbling later years of Shah Jahan’s reign with Taj Mahal in the making and the the fabulous peacock throne which divided his sons with bloodshed.
Intertwined with the earlier narratives about the building of the Taj Mahal is the story of Hindu master craftsman Murthi, who was a gift to the emperor to carve the famous marble ‘jaali’ around Arjumand’s sarcophagus.
Excel Entertainment has definitely taken a revolutionary leap with its entry into the web world with a novel which has already been translated into 25 languages and is sure to meet an exited audience on the other side.
