Netflix really has a way of bringing retro back in style. They did with Stranger Things. If that series was a bit too heavy for the audience, they have a grungy, flippant series titled Everything Sucks that’s based on the life of school kids in the 90s.

Now, we have had series that were based in the 70s and the 80s, but something based in the 90s is really going to press our nostalgia buttons in a whole new way. The trailer has an overload of photos – those non-digital photos -, Walkman, sext messages that were basically digits, so on and so forth. The teaser trailer is very promising. While we can’t say whether it will be great film-making, the very concept of school life and tweenager life in the nineties coming to streaming screens got our attention, all right.

The story’s set in 1996 Oregon, where two groups of high school students – the AV club and the drama club face each other, even as all of them are growing up in an awkward manner. Basically, two friends join to make a film. Now, most of the seminal film-makers today were school and college kids who came together to make a film – that’s what inspired and introduced them to the world of film-making. So, the premise is not just intriguing but also quite real for everyone who ever had a QWERTY phone.

Michael Moan and Ben York Jones create this series, which stars Jahi Di’Allo Winston, Payton Kennedy, Patch Darragh, Claudine Mboligikpelani Nako, Rio Mangini and others.

The series will premiere sometime on February 16 this year. Watch the trailer here:
