Discovery CEO David Zaslav said that they are in the process of changing the culture of their company by making the pivot from being a company about channels to a company about IP After investment of $ 100 million the year before in digital studio Group Nine, the basics of the business have altered for Discovery.
The capitalizing on linear programming assets with digital extensions is proof of Discovery being invested in the Eurosport sports programming business overseas. The company is getting revamped to own all of their IP everywhere in the world, on every device said David Zaslav.
Learning from the ability to tell stories in one minute is their objective. There is going to be a channel for Snapchat focused on 2018 Olympics by Eurosport. Stationed in PyeongChang, South Korea the channel will ensure Discovery’s investment in rights to the Olympics in key European territories for a decade to follow.
“Shark Week” and “Mythbusters”, Snapchat’s shows from Discovery’s extensive archive amounts to “a terrific way (for advertisers) to extend reach by buying inventory on made-for-mobile digital extensions.” said Paul Guyardo, Discovery’s chief commercial officer.
Another paid app by Discovery will be added next to its list of Amazon-distributed content offerings. This will be the third paid app by Discovery. This app “Say Yes” offered for $ 3.99 a month is derived from TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress” franchise. It is a domain of wedding-related programs and content and will be available alongside Investigation Discovery-branded True Crime app and the Destination Unknown paranormal-themed app.
Guyardo has confirmed the growth of Discovery by double digits monthly with an average session of 65-minutes duration. His estimate of apps downloaded on mobile and tablets runs into 6 million. That not being enough, Discovery now wants to launch original programming through its own channels as well. The TLC series “90 Day Fiance” will be the first to get launched this summer as “90 Day Fiance: What Now” available only on the TLC Go streaming channel.
Star power and showmanship are avenues that will never go through any massive alteration in TLC.
Michael Phelps, the Olympic swimmer has been signed on to be a part of Discovery’s annual “Shark Week” presentation this year. The specifics of his role are still being worked out but Zaslav confirmed that he will be having a lot of fun with them and they are going to have a lot of fun with him.
