In a bid to create more buzz for Hollywood’s October release Blade Runner 2049, a short film Nexus 2036 – has been released online. It is directed by Luke Scott, son of the original Blade Runner director Ridley Scott. Set in 2036, Jared Leto plays Niander Wallace, who introduces a new line of ‘perfected’ replicants called the Nexus 9, to lift the ban on replicants.

Blade Runner 2049’s director Denis Villeneuve is said to have handpicked the directors for the three short films to match his own dark vision for the franchise.

This news highlights an interesting development for the digital space. Instead of choosing TV/print for film promotion, opting for the digital space – that too short film – is a precursor that the ‘web is spreading’.

The Digital Hash is sure we will have more such news to report in the foreseeable future.
