Amazon Prime brought mainstream actors to the world of streaming with Inside Edge. Now, they bring more with the thriller Breathe. Madhavan, Amit Sadh and Sapna Pabbi bring an interesting concept to the world of streaming.

Madhavan plays Denzil, a widower with a son who suffers from a life-threatening disease and can survive only he gets on top of an organ donor list – he is currently fourth. Amti Sadh plays Kabir, an alcoholic cop who’s fighting some demons of his own – like an impending divorce from his wife, played by Sapna Pabbi.

What follows is a cat-and-mouse game, with Denzil taking an extreme step of deciding to kill the donors so that his son gets the organs that he requires.

What’s Wow: It must be a casting coup to have Madhavan as a murderous father – someone who’s known for his chocolate boy image. And he does enact the character well – or as well as he can, given the script. It’s Amit Sadh who shines as a flawed cop, who’s doing the unenvious job of juggling a breaking marriage and a spate of murders that may be connected in an uncanny manner.

The fact that an Indian web series has gone the intelligent way of planning the murders as opposed to going the slasher way is impressive. The murders are well planned, and it proves that the scriptwriters wanted to keep it all logical.

What’s Blah:  But while that’s all logical, the character aspects are mindboggling, partly because we don’t know anything else about the characters other than what’s highly important. The cornerstone of creating memorable characters are the minor takeaways that the audience discovers in the screenplay. Unfortunately, the screenplay and the direction are quite pedestrian to create that kind of high level storytelling.

The plot points leave much to be desired as well. For example, in one scene, the doctor says that the donor list is well guarded and can’t be given out – in the next scene, Denzel breaks into a hospital and takes the donor list.

Parting Shot: Breathe still has 4 episodes to go. The concept is impressive and the entire series keeps the audience interested.
