The Test Case was one of the most anticipated web series coming out of India. The initial episodes came out sometime ago and on January 26, the entire first season of The Test Case was available for streaming exclusively on the ALTBalaji platform. The Test Case was a first for many reasons. It starred legit Bollywood celebrities like Juhi Chawla, Nimrat Kaur, Rahul Dev, Atul Kulkarni and others. It was one of the first web series to be produced by a big name, so on and so forth. Here’s our review of the first series.
Captain Shikha Sharma is in the army. She signs up to become part of the Special Forces, an elite army unit that experiences action. Of course, the country and the army are split in their decision and whether Shikha succeeds in doing what she’s planning to forms the story.
What’s Wow: The Test Case is ALTBalaji’s pride, and it’s evident in every frame. The production values are impressive – as they were in Ragini MMS Returns, ALTBalaji’s other big web series. Nimrat Kaur is excellent as Shikha Sharma, the confident soldier who’s still getting a grip on what’s going on – and how she could be part of not just the army’s but also the country’s history. And to add perspective to it, she’s surrounded by a cast that’s evolved with good performances.
What stands out in The Test Case is the way the concept is tackled and more importantly the screenplay that doesn’t celebrate its protagonist but opens her up to the audience to accept or disagree, warts and all.
The way Shikha fails at the obstacles and doesn’t complete all objectives makes the character and the series more relatable and realistic. Compare this to that web series that shows a drunk cop on duty going along his work and not a single complaint lodged against him, and you know where the content is better and more set-in reality.
Though the series is based in an army camp, it’s less of a lesson on army life and more of a taut thriller. Few films talk about army life and fewer are thrillers – and The Test Case has an interesting story that makes it an imminently watchable web series.
What’s Blah? While The Test Case is a good concept that’s executed nicely, it’s not without its flaws. This is one of the more slow-moving web series, making it feel a bit longer than we would like. There are confrontations galore and some of the dialogues could have done without the commas and the pauses.
Parting Shot: The Test Case is an imminently watchable web series.
