ALTBalaji is playing to the galleries with its bouquet of offerings. While it is pitching family dramas for their loyal fanbase from the days of tv, it is also making edgy, hot content for the millennials and beyond. This week, ALTBalaji launched their web series, Bekaaboo, a thriller featuring some of the biggest buzzwords in fiction right now, writer and BDSM.

The series introduces us to India’s best-selling author, Kiyaan Roy (Rajeev Siddhartha), who has a stalker. While he’s not particularly flummoxed, his publishing agent, Natasha (Trishna Mukherjee) thinks that this makes for a great PR story. His girlfriend thinks that this to will pass, but Kashti, the stalker, (Priya Banerjee) has more dark secrets than anyone can guess.

What’s Wow : Bekaaboo is based on a novel, and that’s always a good thing. So, the series has a good story and a gripping screenplay. The performances by everyone are par for the course, though Priya succumbs to hamming her part now and then. The sound recording seems a bit off, but that’s a technical issue.

What’s Blah : ALTBalaji had a good story in their hands, but they let that go and concentrated on the oomph factor. The director Akshay Choubey concentrates more on the freeze frame and slo-mo intimate scenes than really using the camera to tell the story. There’s a lot of intimate scenes, at least in the first half, and are centred around BDSM.

Coming to BDSM, time and again, creators have used this concept just to add some masala to their content, and the same happens with Novoneel’s book and the script. In a perfect world, creators fascinated with this concept would add aspects like the emotional toll BDSM takes on the people, how BDSM is not a thing but a way of life for those who follow the lifestyle, etc. But in this series, as in the others, BDSM is just a kink with pink handcuffs.
