A decade ago, television and theater actors made it to Bollywood and that was newsworthy. With the advent of the Internet and digital media, internet celebrities sprouted all around the country. Some of them became so famous that Big, Bad Bollywood had to take notice and cast them in films. This had a dual advantage. Lesser known films created a buzz when online celebrities signed up for them. The digital celebrities got mainstream exposure, which worked positively for them. While streaming has just hit big strides in India and the number of online to mainstream will only grow, we look at five online actors who have broken the barriers and evolved into Bollywood actors.
#1 Nidhi Singh
Nidhi Singh made a grand entrance in the streaming world with with the ‘Tanya’ character from TVF’s Permanent Roommates. She will soon be seen in a Bollywood project, ‘Brij Mohan Amar Rahe’ that’s up for a release on September 1. Apart from that, there’s buzz that she will be part of another Bollywood project staring Saqib Saleem and Taapsee Pannu. It is interesting to see that Nidhi decides to stay true to form and not sign up a typical Bollywood romance or a drama. The first film has a quirky title and promises a script full of twists and turns. The other film is billed to be a dark comedy set in a village. That’s anything but typical Bollywood.
#2 Sumeet Vyas
Voot and Viacom darling will soon be seen playing a cop in ‘Yo Kya Ho Gaya Bro’, starring Aparshakti Khurana, Shamita Shetty and others. But the dude’s not just busy doing streaming shows, he will also be seen in Veere Di Wedding. He will be playing the romantic interest of none other than Kareena Kapoor Khan in the film that also stars Sonam Kapoor and Swara Bhaskar. With this, Sumeet joins the likes of Diljit Dosanjh, who has earlier played Khan’s husband in ‘Udta Punjab’. It will be interesting to see how Sumeet plays this one out. He has a great following due to his role in the quirky series ‘Permanent Roommates’. ‘Veere Di Wedding’ promises to be a film about love, romance, weddings and everything Bollywood.
#3 Tanmay Bhatt
The nation wants to know – what made Tanmay Bhatt sign on Mr. X. Unless it was an in joke that only Tanmay knows, there’s little reason that Bhatt, quite simply an industry onto himself decided to play a hanger on in the Mukesh Bhatt film ‘Mr.X’, also starring Emraan Haashmi. It’s another matter that the only thing memorable was when Mahesh Bhatt himself crooned for the song ‘Mr X’ from the film. Bhatt also had a walk-in role in the film ‘Ragini MMS. 2’.
These are the three most popular digital stars who will soon be seen in a film or have already made it to the theaters. While the first two are yet to taste success, Tanmay Bhatt has a 50 percent success ratio, as his ‘Ragini MMS 2’ was a certified hit.
